Students were asked to create mosaic pictures according to the following instructions:

  • You will use either designated pattern blocks or fraction circles.
  • You will create a picture using the above pieces.  Rule:  Your picture may not be a person or happy face.
  • You will trace your pieces onto the grid paper to form your pictures.
  • You will colour your pieces in solid colours with pencil crayons.
  • You will outline your picture in black felt pen.
  • The rest of the grid paper must be coloured in a mosaic pattern with pencil crayons (any pattern of colours in any geometric shape).
  • You will cut out the grid.
  • You will estimate the total fraction of grid paper covered by the shapes.  Reduce to lowest terms.
  • You will then estimate the total fraction of grid pieces not covered by shapes.  Reduce to lowest terms.
  • You will then estimate the fraction of the grid paper covered by each shape.  Reduce to lowest terms.
  • You will then calculate two equivalent fractions for each fraction in #8, 9, and 10.
  • You will create and type an interesting name for your Fraction Mosaic.
  • You will type or print your estimated fractions and calculated equivalent fractions onto a provided paper.
  • You will glue your fraction mosaic, name and fraction work onto construction paper.
